Family therapy views individual problems in the context of the larger family unit. The idea being that you can more successfully resolve issues when you understand the interactions and dynamics of the family. The way a family operates will have a significant influence on how the individual problems formed, and whether they are encouraged or enabled by other family members.
Family counselling or therapy is particularly relevant when behavioural or emotional problems being to show up in children. Children will often take on, or introject what is going on in their environment, and begin to act out from a place of feeling unsafe. Often this aspect to a child’s behaviour is missed by parents who start to view the child as being problematic. This is when family counselling can be enormously beneficial.
